History of architectural monuments of Navahradak region. Part 1. Catholic church of St. Michael in Navahradak.

Dear All!

Today we begin to share the interesting facts about the architectural monuments of Navahradak. And the first one on our list will be the Church of St. Michael in Navahradak, which is one of the oldest churches in the town. It was built in 1624 by Dominican monks. It survived the bombing of downtown during World War II. Immediately after the war, in 1948 the church was closed and turned into a granary, and salt was stored in the vaults of the church. People saved the icons of the Archangel Michael, Jesus Christ and the Mother of God, the rest of the property was first transferred to the district finance department and then sold through the shops of the district consumer union. After the grain warehouse was liquidated, the authorities couldn't come to conclusion how to use the church. At first it was planned to use it as a cinema, then as a library, and even as a museum. Later, the church was used as a warehouse and furniture store, then it housed a procurement point. In 1976 the church burned down and stood in ruins until 1986. During this period, it finally fell into disrepair. As a result of the leaking roof, the church was almost completely destroyed inside, the murals were damaged and the carving was lost. The restoration works were completed in 1996.
